1830 Census Help

How to read the 1830 Census:

The numbers are listed as so for both male and female Household members: Under 5, of 5 and under 10, of 10 and under 15, of 15 and under 20, of 20 and under 30, of 30 and under 40, of 40 and under 50, of 50 and under 60, of 60 and under 70, of 70 and under 80, of 80 and under 90, of 90 and under 100, of 100 and upwards.

< means: less than

The easiest way to do this is to count the numbers and see which age column it falls in.

Example:

Aaron Hinson 312001 1101101

Aaron's family would look like this if we put it into a chart:

Head of household is Aaron Hinson

Males: 312001

3 is the 1st number, so there are 3 males < 5 yrs old

1 is the 2nd number, so there is 1 male 5 yrs and < 10 yrs old

2 is the 3rd number, so there are 2 males ages from 15 to < 20 yrs old

1 is the 6th number, so there is one male 30 to < 40 yrs old

Females: 1101101

1 is the 1st number, so there is one female < 5 yrs old

1 is the 2nd number, so there is one female 5 to < 10 yrs old

1 is the 4th number, so there is one female 15 to < 20 yrs old

1 is the 5th number, so there is one female 20 and < 30 yrs old

1 is the 7th number, so there is 1 female from 40 to < 50 yrs old
