Notes from County Court Minutes 1848
Compiled in July 1993 and submitted by Jacquelyn Cox Otts
I hope these notes will provide clues as to the location of these people during this period
of time. I have attempted to keep the spelling of the names as I saw them in the records.

Nehemiah D. Vernon, for the use of Alsey Clements, vs P. Hill - p. 194
Defendant made default. Plaintiff to recover $166.29 and costs incurred.
Felix Shropshur, Administrator of Hanah Woodruff, vs Willis W. Nichols and Oliver S. Quinn - p. 194

Farmer Moor vs Jonathan Moor - p. 197
Defendant made default. Plaintiff to recover from defendant his damages, but as the court is unadvised as to the amount of the damages a jury is formed to inquire. Jury: Saml. Stanley and 11 others. Plaintiff damages set at $126 and costs incurred.
Thomas ___ Sandford vs Isriael Standifer - p. 197-198
Plaintiff filed his affidavit showing that "ten hundred and forty two pounds" of seed cotton and one bale of picked cotton weighing about 500 pounds levied on by Joseph M. Foshee by virtue of an attachment issued by David E. Davis, a Justice of the peace, on the 17th day of January 1848 in favor of T. J. S. Sandford against Isriael Standifer, is subject to waste and depreciation. Sheriff ordered to sell and return proceeds to court.
Thomas J. S. Sandford vs John L. Lawhon - p. 198
Jury: Samuel Standley and 11 others. Jury decided the bale of cotton was subject to the plaintiff's attachment. Plaintiff to recover from claimant, Lawhon, his costs.
Jesse Reach vs Alsey Clements, Overseer of Road - p. 198
Alsey Clements to recover from Jesse Reach and Oliver S. Quinn, his security, $4.00 (fine issued by the Justice of the Peace) and costs incurred.
Jacob Mabery granted license to keep a tavern in the town of Centreville. - p. 198
John W. Hays granted license to keep a tavern in the town of Centreville. - p. 199
Mrs. Elizabeth Henry granted license to keep a tavern in the town of Centreville for the accommodation of travelers. - p. 199

Jury: David Ward and 11 others. Defendant to recover his costs from plaintiff.
Case and Wilson vs Charles G. McMurry - p. 201
Neither party appeared in court. Case continued until next term.
David E. Davis vs William Lathem - p. 201
Defendant made default. Plaintiff to recover $93.60 and costs incurred.
Thomas Eliott vs Jones Griffin - p. 201
Jury: David Ward and 11 others. Defendant to recover his costs from plaintiff.
Jacob P. House vs Elisha Robertson - p. 202
Defendant failed to appear. Plaintiff to recover the sum of $90.76 and costs incurred.
Joseph Dye vs William Moor - p. 202
Case dismissed with Moor paying the costs of the Justice of the Peace and Dye to pay the costs of the County Court witnesses.
Thomas J. S. Sandford vs Israel Standefer - p. 202
Jury: David Ward and 11 others. Plaintiff to recover $78, his damages as assessed by the jury, and costs incurred.
