Logan Family Research #3

submitted by Don Logan

1 February 2000

Fact 1:
OWENS' Dictionary of Alabama Biography states in the biographical sketch of Stephen Douglas LOGAN (p. 1062):

"son of John H. and Levinia (Moseley) Logan, the former a native of Shelby County, NC, born in 1802, who went, when quite young, with his parents to Tennessee, and later to Alabama, where they located at Centreville, "

Fact 2:
Memorial Record of Alabama: "Personal Memoirs--Bibb County" states in the biographical sketch of Stephen Douglas LOGAN (p. 490):

".son of John H. and Levinia (Moseley) Logan. His father was a native of Shelby county, NC, born in 1802; his mother was a native of Edgefield district, SC, botn in 1818, and came, when a small child, to Alabama with her parents, who settled at Centreville."

".John H. Logan, when quite young, emigrated with his parents to Tennessee, and when sixteen years of age he came with them to Alabama, locating at Centreville."

Fact 3:
There is not now, nor has there ever been a "Shelby County," North Carolina. There is, however, a town of Shelby, located in present-day Cleveland Co., which before its creation in 1841 was contained within Rutherford and Lincoln Counties.

Fact 4:

Records of original purchases of land in Bibb Co., AL from the federal government include the following:

John H. LOGAN
N half of SE quarter, Sec. 36, T'ship 22-N, Range 8-E (8 Oct 1835)
S half of SE quarter, Sec. 36, T'ship 22-N, Range 8-E (10 Apr 1837)

John HUNT
W half of the NE quarter, Sec. 31, T'ship 22-N, Range 9-E (1 Aug 1831)
E half of the SW quarter, Sec. 31, T'ship 22-N, Range 9-E (12 Aug 1834)

Since John H. LOGAN's middle name was "Hunt," it is possible, if not probable, that he was related in some way to the HUNT family. As John HUNT owned land in the immediate vicinity of John Hunt LOGAN (only a half mile to the east), at the same time, it would be wise to investigate the possibility of their being related.

Furthermore, the southern boundary of John Hunt LOGAN's land in Section 36 was the line between Bibb and Perry Co., AL. Lida E. LOGAN of San Antonio, TX, in her book The Logans of Old Ninety-Six, made this statement on pages 166-167 (source not documented):

"Several family groups who had the surname LOGAN came to AL. Among those settling in Coosa Co. were Ellis, Henry, and Samuel LOGAN. Others, who came from NC and settled in northern Perry Co., were Coleman, David, Mary, Freeman, Rsein [sic], John, and Reuben LOGAN."

Thus, there were only two deeds before 1840 in Rutherford Co., NC in which property was transferred between a LOGAN and a HUNT:

Katherine HUNT to John LOGAN in 1826
Benjamin and Joseph LOGAN to John HUNT in 1837

[It would probably be a good idea to get copies or transcriptions of these deeds in case their contents might shed some light on the Bibb Co., AL LOGAN problem.]

Rutherford Co., NC cemetery records:
*******
FRANCIS LOGAN CEMETERY - Rutherford County, NC - Cemeteries FRANCIS LOGAN CEMETERY Rutherford County, NC
Located near the top of a hill on a branch of Cathey's Creek. There are other ways of reaching this cemetery, but I walked up the small creek that passes the home of Mrs, Furman Walker and after crossing two pastures crossed a branch of the creek at an old bridge at an old house place (Edgerton) and followed up the ridge between the streams to a wooded site and the cemetery. Read by C. Kenyon Withrow, 1975. A thank you to Miles Philbeck, Bulletin Editor for The Genealogical Society Of Old Tryon County for giving us permission to use this survey. From Bulletin of Genealogical Society of Old Tryon County November 1975.

Another potentially important clue is found in Cabarrus Co., NC records:

Cabarrus Co. marriage index:
John LOGAN & Polly HUNT 27 July 1799
Freeborn G. LOGAN & Elizabeth WILHELM 14 July 1830
[one Freborn LOGAN married Nancy James SHAW 3 Sep 1841 Davidson Co., NC]

Index to 1810 federal census of NC:

John HUNT Cabarrus Co., p. 137

This tells us that not only did one John LOGAN marry a Polly HUNT in Cabarrus Co., NC, approximately ten years before the birth of John Hunt LOGAN, but also that in 1810 there was a John HUNT residing in the same county.
