Fielden Scoggins

Contributor's note:  This represents four pages from a home-made book that was compiled by Mrs. Ann S. Englebert of Green Pond (Bibb County), AL and donated to the Shelby County Historical Society, Columbiana , AL. That book traces Mrs. Englebert's lineage down from Fielden Scroggins.  I am contributing this material to the Bibb County website hoping that it will be useful to others and that someone might point me to additional information on Fielden Scroggins, who I suspect was linked to my great great great grandfather Nehemiah Newton Scoggins. THE LEGACY OF A FAMILY 
THE SCOGGINS FAMILY 

When I started this book, I did it in memory of my father, Ross Melton Cleveland M C Scoggins. But after I got started I realized that there was two other people that deserved some recognition. I do this book in loving memory of FIELDEN AND SALLY SCROGGINS. These two people had a very hard life, and it's a shame that you can't legally prove that they ever existed as a family. Just a note on a family sheet. We know they were real, because of the stories told to us by our fathers. My father told me how difficult life was in the days of his childhood being in a family with Indian blood line. You see Sally was a Creek Indian, the story Daddy and Uncle Walter told me was, Sally was the only daughter of an Indian Chief, she was a Princess.
I am very proud to be a descendent of Fielden and Sally Scroggins, after all Sally is a true American. I have enjoyed learning about my family and I intend to keep looking for more information, maybe I can find some legal proof of this family.

Fielden, Born ca 1790, Married SALLY, a Creek Indian woman. In1832 Fielden and Sally are listed on the Creek Indian census with Sally listed as head of household. They were living in the Creek Indian town of Cusetta (Cussetaw) on the Little Uchee ( Euchee ) Creek in Russell County Alabama; In 1840 Fielden is listed on the federal census as Livingin Dale County Alabama. Cleveland used to tell of the hardships his Grandfather's family endured. Fielden was called a SQUAW MAN, and his grandfather James was referred to as a HALF BREED.

JAMES M SCROGGINS 
 
JAMES M SCROGGINS born 1809 in Georgia, the son of Fielden and Sally Scroggins. James married March 30,1833 in Bibb Co, Alabama to MARY LEONARD WILSON born 1811 in South Carolina. In 1850 and 1860 James and Mary ¥ere living in Bibb Co, on the East side of the Cahaba River near Maplesville, which is now a part of Chilton Co. He made his living as a farmer. James and all of his sons served in the confederate army. James joined April 16,1861 in Enterprise Al, he served CSA Company A, First Battalion, Alabama Cadets as a private. He was taken prisoner of war August 8, 1864 in East Georgia and was paroled May 13,1865 in Meridian Miss. In a special census taken in 1866, James and Mary lived near Stanton Al, and stated that one soldier from his house hold had been killed.
James and Mary had eight children.
