A.D. SMITH
Mr. Andrew D. Smith died at his home in West Blocton Monday night, Feb.7th, after an illness of about ten days. Mr. Smith had lived a long and useful life, having reached the age of 88 years. He was a brave soldier, having fought four years in the Confederate army, never failing in his duty to the cause. He was a kind and loving father, a loyal friend and a true Christian, a member of the Methodist Church, which he attended regularly as long as his strength permitted. He is survived by five sons and six daughters: Misses Lula, Lyda and Alice Smith, of this place, Mrs. A.L.Hockett of East Lake, Mrs. L.V. Harvill of Sipsey, and Mrs. R.E. Evans of Wilder, Tenn; Messrs. Y.S. and Morgan Smith, of this place, Dr. T.O. Smith of Wilsonville, W.W. and V.V. Smith of Birmingham; also twelve grandchildren. The remains were interred at the Scottsville cemetery Wednesday morning, Rev. Roy Hewlett having charge of the services, which were conducted from the home. A prefusion of beautiful floral tributes were silent attestants of the high esteem in which the deceased was held. He leaves to his family the heritage of a long and honorable career, which is more to be prized than great riches.
SMITH__Miss J.E. Caffee was born Oct. 12, 1837. Professed religion and joined the Baptist Church at Mt. Mariah, while in her 16th year, in which communion she lived a consistent Christian life to the day of her death, which occurred at her home near Scottsville, Ala., Aug. 20, 1905.
She was married to A.D. Smith Nov. 6, 1860. To this union were born 12 children, eleven of whom still live and mourn the loss of mother.
Her house was the home of the ministers for years. Her husband and most of the children being members of the Methodist Church. Methodist and Baptist preachers felt equally at home there. Sister Smith was a devoted wife, a loving mother and faithful Christian. She was a great sufferer from rheumatism for several years previous to her death. She was an invalid, and confined to her room from the time I first knew her three years past. She was patient, submissive, truthful. It was a benediction to visit her home during the years of her suffering.
She was a superior woman, as is seen in her household. Her children and husband rise up to call her blessed. All eleven of her children living, are good, upright men and women. Not one has ever gone astray, or brought shame or sorrow to their home or country. Parents who give the world such an household are a benediction to their country, and have shown in the best way possible, that their lives have been a great sucess. The world is better because they lived. Such fruit is the greatest success.
Sister Smith's last days were days of intense suffering. She was perfectly conscious to the last. She was heard to say, when in great pain, "Father take me." Trusting Him to the last. She realized, "to depart and be with Christ was better." The bereaved husband and weeping children look to the beautiful gates, where they hope to meet the loved one bye and bye. So be it.
