Death and Marriage Notices from Jefferson County, Alabama Newspapers, Volume I
(1854-1881), Compiled by Larry E. Caver, Jr.
This is to inform you about the release of my latest book, Death And Marriage Notices From Jefferson
County, Alabama Newspapers, Vol. I (1854-1881). This is the first volume in a continuing series of
newspaper transcriptions related to Jefferson County, Alabama. The collection contains newspaper
transcriptions from surviving issues of newspapers that once operated in Jefferson County between
the years 1854-1881.
The book has approximately 354 pages, soft binding and includes a detailed index. It contains
newspaper transcriptions from surviving issues of: The Jones Valley Times (1854-1855), The Elyton
Herald (1869), The Daily News (1874), The Birmingham Observer (1880-1881), The Alabama True Issue (1880), The Birmingham Iron Age (1874-1881), and The Weekly Independent (1879).
This collection is of special interest for anyone doing research in the Greater Birmingham, Alabama
area. The earliest newspapers of Jefferson County were published at the town of Elyton, and recorded
many death and marriage notices for some of the earliest settlers of Jefferson County and neighboring
counties. Later newspapers were published in the newly formed city of Birmingham. These newspapers
recorded valuable information on the city's early settlers. Many of these settlers had migrated from
diverse parts of the entire state to become residents of Alabama's "Melting Pot".
Birmingham's early newspapers also included many news items copied from other newspapers in the
surrounding counties of St. Clair, Shelby, Bibb, Tuscaloosa, Walker and Blount. They also included
news items copied from newspapers in counties in North Alabama such as Madison, Lauderdale, Fayette,
Cullman, DeKalb and Jackson.
This collection is also a value tool for anyone researching Alabama. The Birmingham Iron Age included
weekly columns, "Died In Alabama", "Married In Alabama", and "State News", which provided many death and
marriage notices from all over the state. These columns included coverage extending north to Huntsville
and as far south as Mobile.
The official release date for this book was November 1, 2002. The book has been published and copies
will be available for purchase on or after this date. The book has been published by Pioneer
Publishing Company. It is available for $35 per copy plus $4 postage/handling. If you would like to
